Re: Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

If we’re playing with 60 players then I’m with oakboy, we should be going to every World Cup thinking we were going to win. May be Dan Luger knew what he was doing after all. We could finally get all those back rowers in! Still no room for Sam Simmonds though. Puja He just doesn't fit the system! B...

Re: Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

I'm a massive Eddie fanboy so will prob get this book for Christmas. I think the one thing for me on Eddie is he has the perfect attitude for a England coach and IMO that goes for every sport. Me too, and I've always liked his chippy sense of humour. Apart from the fact that he's brilliant at diver...

Re: Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

Out of interest, does he mention Robshaw in the book at all? The Steffon argument starting up in another thread brought me across the article from 2015 where he trashed Robshaw in the press, before he started managing him and realised just what a good player he actually was. Puja He does. And it's ...

Re: Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

Read it too, and agree with most of your thoughts. On Itoje, my sense is that Jones likes his players to hold him in reverence and be slightly wary of him. Itoje is just so ridiculously confident and comfortable in own skin, even before he was a bonafide superstar, that he didn’t behave like this t...

Re: Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

Absolutely. It is all a bit of a weird 'embracing of his own bitterness'! Also, on the system , I think the Simmondses are destined never to get much of a look in whilst Eddie is coach. In all honesty I can understand why. He's identified Curry and Billy as two of his absolute world class options in...

Eddie Jones' book - insights / impressions

Don't know who else has read it, but thought I'd write down some thoughts on what I reckon it means for England, especially as everyone is talking about Farrell, The Simmondses and selection in general. As for the book it's repetitive as hell and contains no end of humblebrag, but to be honest it's ...

Re: Swing low, should it go?

Also, was the chiefs logo really selected to celebrate native American culture or to sell stuff? I think there's a difference. That's exactly the problem. Native Americans have a history of being murdered, displaced and oppressed by American capitalism, only to have their culture sold on to the ver...

Re: Championship breakaway?!?!?

Does sound like Griffiths is thinking big and radical, and will therefore be completely ignored. As a big fan of the NFL and NBA, the excitement and equalising qualities that a draft bring are genuinely brilliant, and I think would bring a real point of difference.

Re: Autumn Tests

Wait, are they going to be having crowds of spectators at these? Haven't you heard? COVID is over; we've beaten it. We must've done, otherwise why would all the restrictions have been completely relaxed? It's only a problem in other countries now, which is why we have quarantines for flying in from...

Re: Lansdown in the Times
If we do want an equal ise system then I think we should go the NFL route- conferences, play offs and a draft system for players coming out academies and total transparency on salaries.
Bingo! I actually think this is the absolute best thing to do. Centralise the hell out of it, wit...

Re: Lansdown in the Times

. His point is that why should clubs (not just Bristol) that can afford it not be allowed to spend. As Bath and Exeter, alledgedly, support this position I assume their backers have a similiar view. If a club can't afford it then find the investment, grow the incomes or find a level you can afford....

Re: Lansdown in the Times

That was kind of my thoughts exactly. But I find it worrying, especially seeing as he's football first, that eventually he'll just piss off when he realises there's just not that much money in Rugby and leave them completely buggered. If someone wants to hold up Exeter as a great example of how to r...

Lansdown in the Times

Steve Lansdown has been throwing his (financial) weight around in the Times, saying just because some clubs are struggling financially doesn't mean we should " go down to the lowest common denominator " and make cuts to the salary cap or changes to the marquee contracts. For clubs who are ...

I'm not saying the game would die out. But as a professional sport it would be in a pretty poor state and not many kids would be keen to take it up if our national team performed like Italy...

Re: Salary cap review published

I think the marquee stuff is good. I'm not sure Rugby works in the same way as football in having headline players particularly pushing the gate fans/shirt sales. Fair enough if you had Lomu or Wilkinson, but (as amazing as he is) can't see Radradra suddenly increasing Bristols ticket sales exponent...

Re: England forward pack as things stand

I’m not saying they’re similar players exactly, more that they would occupy similar roles. I see Curry, Underhill, Ludlam, Willis and Wilson as flankers who can cover 6 and 7 (or 6 and 8 in Wilson’s case). Their skill sets are different but all offer (to a greater or less degree), a mix of breakdow...

Re: England forward pack as things stand

My main bugbear (which I’ve definitely raised on multiple occasions) is that using Billy as a heavy carrier can’t really be replicated by our other 8s. Dombrandt, Mercer, Earl and Simmonds are all different types of player, but none of them are best used as heavy carriers. Neither is Curry. I think...

Re: Pro game Revolution?

I'm still working on the assumption that these clubs would be chosen by the RFU as combining financial viability, and assets with a geographical spread of England. It's massively harsh on Bath, Gloucester, Worcester and a bit harsh on Wasps and Irish, but Bristol and Exeter are definitely the best b...
