Re: COVID19

Well NZ now has 0 active cases so we are fully out of lockdown. There will be crowds at the rugby, a jam at the bar afterwards and licking strangers is being positively encouraged. The border remains basically shut though, with strict quarantine for any exceptions.

Re: RC and 6N set to align calendar

Thanks, Lizard. So there was some sort of balance between quality teams and international teams to make an exciting product. However, if it was working, then why did people want change it? Was it only really working for NZ? Wasn't part of the reason Aus wanted more teams was so they could expand th...

Re: RWC2023 qualification predictions

I'd generally agree with you, except that I'd expect Romania and Spain to outqualify Russia in Europe. Not sure in which order though. And I'm far from convinced Canada will make it through the repechage this time! Heck, it's possible (if unlikely) they might be pipped to Americas 3 by Brazil given...

Re: Don't call it a comeback

I'm gradually coming to terms with the fact that having carefully nurtured (Auckland-born) Lizard Jnr into the proper way of thinking as a Chiefs fan, as a Kiwi dad I'm going to have to take him to a Blues match to see Dan Carter play.

Re: RC and 6N set to align calendar

I think that Super Rugby lost its initial promise when it first expanded by diluting the player base in the two countries least able to support it. Australia was always going struggle to staff and pay for teams outside the union states. SA had its own politics that I still don’t fully get. Then to t...

Re: Freedom of Speech vs Our Rights

When is something deemed to be freedom of speech and when is it deemed to be a violation of our rights to hear it? Racism is ugly. There are now more racist YouTube videos, tweets, and Facebook posts than ever before. I've been known to shut people out of my life for being, how do I put this...raci...

Re: RC and 6N set to align calendar

Expanding a European rugby competition to allow European nations to play is an expansion on the same theme. Importing a side from Africa because they've left their previous establoshed competition seems like a bit more of a change of theme. Or would you like to extoll the benefits that going to add...

Re: RC and 6N set to align calendar

Good. The 6N is a precious jewel that is luckily also a phenomenal money-spinner. I don't see why we should screw with it to benefit a Tier 1 nation who are big enough and competent enough to find their own rugby competitions. Puja Yes, the Six Nations is a sacrosanct, immutable chalice bearing the...

Yep. I had literally forgotten he existed.

Ron Cribb has the same number of test caps as Stan Meads and Grant Batty. One more than Andy Earl and Waka Nathan.

Re: Good call or odd call?

Holah, Robertson, Jerry (RIP), Randell... not sure about all of those, I don't think Thorne would have played 7, suspect there's a least one more I've totally forgotten. By way of of apology I'll note Cane probably got the job because he didn't start when you shat the bed against England, just one ...

Re: Scoring against the post protector

I played a match on an American Football pitch once. It was at Graz University in Austria. I can't remember whether the posts were NFL style or just regular "H" shape so they can't have had much effect on the match. What had more effect on the match was that it was played in a constant dow...

Re: Good call or odd call?

And to compare numbers: After McCaw retired, Cane started at 7 in 35 of 53 (66%) of NZ's tests before being made captain. (He started at 7 in 13 of the 53 matches when his test career overlapped with McCaw's. In 1 of them Richie wore 8.) From McCaw's debut (about a year after Kronfeld's last test) h...

Re: Good call or odd call?

Honestly, I think you're overstating the case against Cane, who has been consistently selected for the big matches, and his numbers aren't all that different from McCaw's prior to being named permanent captain. You might be right. Cane just doesn't stand out to me as a 7 the same way that Kronfeld ...

I guess broadcast needs will dictate that they play in a proper stadium, but are people really going to switch off if the only live footy has slightly shaky cherry-picker camera angles? They've broadcast club matches from Western Springs before.

NZ has had no deaths for a week and a weekly rolling average of <2 new cases/day. We drop a level of lockdown tomorrow. It's still not clear if/when amateur rugby will start. Re: Don't call it a comeback

I could maybe see a "final" between the NZ and AU champs, if Covid remains under control in both places by then. More interesting is that in the draw above, you'll note that although some venues are named stadia, others are just cities. Apparently the Blues can't afford to open Eden Park w...

Re: Good call or odd call?

Fair analysis of the current stocks, I guess. Even if Cane is currently our best 7, he's not of the undroppable quality that Michael Jones, Kronfeld and McCaw provided virtually unbroken from 1987 to 2015. I still expect someone of that ilk to emerge, although it's a little worrying that since McCaw...
