Who Will Win?

On Saturday 16th March, Ireland will host Scotland at the Aviva Stadium in the final round of the Six Nations Championship.

Ireland will enter this clash as the favourites. After all, not only are they the reigning Grand Slam champions, but they’ve also beaten Scotland in all of the last five meetings between the two sides (including most recently at the Rugby World Cup).

That said, although a Scottish victory in Dublin would undoubtedly be surprising, a win for Gregor Townsend’s men cannot be ruled out entirely. They’ve shown some flashes of brilliance in the last couple of years and this is the perfect opportunity for them to show that they’re ready to take the next step in their development.

Think you know which way Ireland vs Scotland will go? Vote in our poll.

Head-to-Head

Of late, Ireland have dominated this fixture. In fact, Andy Farrell’s men have won all of the last five meetings between the two sides, including a 36-14 victory at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. During these meetings, Ireland have averaged 28 points per match, while Scotland have averaged 13.

Team Form

Ireland enjoyed a promising yet ultimately lacklustre 2023. After all, they started the year by claiming the Grand Slam at the 2023 Six Nations Championship. However, they failed to carry this momentum into the Rugby World Cup. Despite passing through the pool stage unbeaten and defeating eventual champions South Africa in the process, they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage after losing against New Zealand.

Scotland’s year followed a similar pattern. They performed admirably at the 2023 Six Nations, where they finished third after defeating England, Wales and Italy. However, after being placed in a tough pool at the Rugby World Cup, they were eliminated at the pool stage following defeats against both Ireland and South Africa.

Below our team form guide, you can see in-depth stats about how the two sides have performed in their last five games, including stats about the number of tries they’ve scored, their overall points difference and the number of times they’ve scored the first try. We’ve also detailed how often each team has scored the first points in a game and how often they’ve won the race to 10 points.

Player Head-to-Head

Ireland vs Scotland matches are often tight, tense and close encounters that are decided by either a mistake or a single moment of magic. So, who is likely to stand up and be counted this time around?

Well, here’s how Johnny Sexton and Ben Healy have performed in recent Ireland vs Scotland matches.

Other Fixtures

This encounter between Ireland and Scotland is hotly anticipated. However, it’s important to remember that it takes place during a packed weekend of Six Nations action that also includes Wales vs Italy and France vs England.

Take a look at all the upcoming fixtures and latest results at both club and international level and plan your viewing.

When did Ireland first play Scotland? When did Ireland first play Scotland?

Does the winner of Ireland vs Scotland receive a trophy? Does the winner of Ireland vs Scotland receive a trophy?
